DEAF PRESIDENT NOW

Dir. Nyle DiMarco, Davis Guggenheim

In 1988, Gallaudet University, the only Deaf University in the World, was faced with devestating news. Out of three different candidates for the new President, the Board of Directors of the University chose the only hearing candidate, over two deaf candidates. Outraged, the Students of Gallaudet took to the streets, in a protest that lasted one whole week and changed the course of history for not only the University, but for the entire country itself. In this documentary, we watch the recounting of events from the 4 student leaders of the DEAF PRESIDENT NOW Movement, Bridgette Bourne-Firl, Jerry Covell, Greg Hlibok, and Tim Rarus.

This is probably the best documentary movie I've ever watched. This movie goes in depth on deaf culture from the 80's and how different it is compared to now, from the technology like TTY's(Teletype writers) to the mindset of deaf people and how they interact in society at large. This movie showcases the creative resourcefulness and stubborn determination of the students of Gallaudet University to change the status quo.
